Shelling Pea, Green Arrow
Product Description:(Pisum sativum) Also known as Green Shaft, this English shelling pea was first introduced by Hurst in 1971. Its more common name Green Arrow is likely a reference to the long-pointed pods that each plant produces in great abundance. These 4-5” pods almost always grow in pairs atop 24-28” vines. Each mature pod contains 9-11 densely packed peas ready to cook or freeze. Because of this reliably heavy yield, Green Arrow has gained massive popularity around the world as both a home and market variety. Resistant to downy mildew and fusarium wilt. 75 seeds per packet.
Growing Information: Peas thrive in cool weather and will germinate in soils as low as 40°F, making them the ideal crop for an early spring planting. As soon as the soil can be worked, direct-sow your seeds 1-2” in depth and 2-3” apart at the base of a trellis. For an increased yield, plant a row on either side of the trellis. For larger plantings, space your rows 18-24” apart. 65 days to maturity.
Seed Saving: Before sending your entire harvest to the kitchen table, you may want to consider how many seeds you will need for next year’s garden. With about 10 peas in each pod, you likely won’t have to sacrifice much! When saving pea seeds, it is crucial that you allow the plant to dry out completely. Mature pods will be brown and brittle. Make sure that your plants are receiving adequate airflow to prevent excessive moisture and mold growth throughout the drying process. However, a small amount of mildew spotting on the outside of drying pods is completely normal and no reason for concern. Once dry, harvest the seed pods and crack them open. Sort out any damaged, misshapen, or rotting peas. Continue the drying process if necessary then store them in a cool, dry place.
Germination Rate: 98%
