Popping Corn, Glass Gem

$3.85

Product Description: (Zea mays) The predecessor to Glass Gem was bred in the early 1990s by the famous Cherokee corn collector Carl “White Eagle” Barnes. This variety was a cross between numerous cultivars including two Osage varieties (one red flour corn and another called “Greyhorse”) as well as a Pawnee miniature popcorn. A grower named Greg Schoen later obtained and planted this corn near his home in New Mexico where he crossed it with a Pueblo popcorn variety. The result of this cross was the Glass Gem corn that we know today.

Glass Gem has since soared in popularity and for good reason! This dazzling variety looks just like its name suggests. Each cob expresses its own unique blend of multi-colored kernels closely resembling stained glass. Once dry, the kernels can be milled into a flinty cornmeal or popped for a healthy snack. Each 8-10 foot stalk produces 1-2 ears. 100 seeds per packet.

Growing Information: Direct seed 5 cm deep (2 inches) and 25 cm (10 inches) apart after all danger of frost has passed. Space rows about 1 meter (3 feet) apart. Plant in full sun and keep the plants well watered. 115 days to maturity.

Seed Saving: Saving grain seeds is incredibly simple in the sense that your final product is the seed! Once dried throughly, no additional effort is required. Simply store the seeds in a cool, dry location until you are ready to plant again.

Germination Rate: 98%
