Cabbage, Charleston Wakefield
Product Description: (Brassica oleracea) This heirloom cabbage was introduced to southern growers in 1892 in response to the poor heat tolerance of its predecessor Early Jersey Wakefield. Even so, Charleston Wakefield tolerates frost well and can be overwintered successfully. Features a larger head than other Wakefield types, weighing in at 4-6 pounds, with a somewhat conical shape. Open-pollinated. 200 seeds per packet.
Growing Information: For summer harvest, start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the expected last frost date in your area and transplant outdoors after the last frost. For fall harvest, direct-sow outdoors in mid-summer. Sow ¼ inch deep. Space 24-36 inches apart. 72 days to maturity.
Seed Saving: As a biennial crop, cabbage plants only produce seeds in their second year of growth. The plants require a 10-12 week vernalization period with temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees. In warmer climates, this can be accomplished in the field (with a layer of mulch to insulate if needed). In colder climates, its best to uproot the entire plant, trim its outer leaves, replant into a container of moist sand, then store it in a cool, humid root cellar until it can be transplanted in the spring.
